Grandpa Herbert

My cousin shared a story the other day about my grandpa and I wanted to always remember it so what better way to do that than to share it on my blog and have it in my family blog books? Grandpa Herbert is my Dad's Dad and he passed away many years ago. He lived in Utah so I didn't get to see him much after we moved to Oregon, but I do remember him. I remember him playing the harmonica like nobody's business and I just found out that he also played the mouth organ. I don't really know the difference though... Anyway here is the story my cousin shared.

"My Grandpa Herbert was the long-time janitor at the church on 27th and Tyler. He loved it, he loved the people. It is said he never cashed the checks given to him for his work. I remember playing there as a kid while he worked, whistling and singing, there always a song in his heart. He also played the organ there. One time someone made a remark to him that doesn't it disgust you cleaning up after everybody's mess and filth? Something about that work being degrading.
He responded, "I've never looked at it that way. I am just happy to have the place clean and ready for people to come back! I'm proud to prepare a place each week for people to come and worship Christ."

This story really touched me and it made me happy to know a little bit more about my Grandpa. I wish I had more time with him, but I am grateful to know that one day I will be with him and all my family again. There will be plenty of time to catch up. I'm grateful for the example that this story has taught me about perception. Thanks Grandpa.

  1. I love it. Isn't it so nice to be able to have those memories to pass on? So glad for wonderful, Christlike examples, it sounds as though your grandpa was just that kind of guy :)
